Scribefire and Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

ScribeFire :: Firefox Add-ons

I am blogging this from my new work laptop using the ScribeFire Firefox addon.

I am also using Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. I was astonished when I tried Gutsy on the laptop. The laptop itself is a HP 6720s. It came with Vista and ran like crap (and, for some reason, the wifi did not work). I thought “I’ll install XP on it and it will run really nice”. It made sense, it has a core 2 duo processor and 1gb of RAM. So I did. Nightmare. No drivers for Windows XP on the HP website. I managed to track down all of the drivers I needed except the wired LAN. Since it is a laptop that wasn’t too much of an issue.

Step forward to Friday, when I downloaded and installed the latest Ubuntu - Gutsy Gibbon (7.10). The installer is a “live” CD, which means that you boot up into what amounts to the full OS without actually installing anything. From there its just a case of double clicking the “install” option on the desktop and you’re off.

The astonishing thing is that even in its “live” state everything worked! WiFi, LAN, Video, everything. After installing, all I had to do was tell Compiz-Fusion not to check what graphics card I have before it starts (the X3100 chip is on a blacklist) and I had a fully functioning 3d, effects filled OS.

So now, all I need to do is figure out a way of using Ubuntu at work. Maybe VNC into my XP workstation.

If anyone is interested, my reason for not posting has been that I was installing Vista on all of the workstations at work. The product is abysmal with errors in wild abandon so I have been redeploying XP back down. As such I haven’t had a lot of time to post. By the end of next week the process will be complete. I can’t wait.

Digg.com

In one of the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy books there is a party which has been going on for quite some time. They have become a group of space pirates who go around the place raiding for nibbles and booze leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

I would like to compare this party with digg.com the popular user rated content news site. Don’t get me wrong - I love Digg. I get a hell of a lot of useful and interesting stuff from there but the userbase makes it a destructive and dangerous animal.

I was moved to blog after clicking on “What happens if everyone adds one word to a story?” (link). I was greeted by a story which read:

John rose quietly to avoid being heard leaving. Shit, fuck this .Where is my fucking Jetpack! Meanwhile, Heather was going to suck my hairy balls . She protested when the nasty taste reached her mouth and she looked amazed at the huge throbbing monster in my pants . Wow! She screamed as she bounced on my trampoline . After a while she died again and again and again and kevinrose died too.
It was only Christmas but cheese was hep fucking crashed my cock . ROFL said the dog. jesus crippled me internally where my love nest was throbbing painfully emitting passionate cows of anal doom and gloom from beyond the grave of santa claws with a spoon SPARTAAAAAAAAAA. TheyAreCensoringOurEdits!! ADMINsuckBALLS HoldDownF5forTENminutes ihascheezburger MyNipplesExplodeWithDelight
Then John took drugs to see reality but God said to RoguesDoItFromBehind that drugs are bad mmmmkay. . IMexplodingINmyPANTS dot comma Pedobear stays in vegas and marries marries elvis newton whoever that is . Anyway, my penis is swollen and raw. Help! Milhouse

and my choices for the next word are wanked, ate, is, raped, eated, optimusprime, allyourbasenever, ronpaul2008, 4chan, sucked, shat, from, hasboobs… actually, no I can’t be arsed. Suffice to say that all the suggestions for the next word are either expletives, digg usernames or Internet memes. So Digg has ruined someone’s plan to create an interesting story collaboratively.

But that isn’t the worst. See also Digg.com users attempting to break the new Pownce service from (ironically) the creators of Digg. The idea is that someone with a pownce invite invites a load of diggers who then use their free invites to invite a load more diggers. Interestingly no one has said it is especially for diggers, the diggers have made that part up for themselves. Anyway, the reason Pownce was invite only is that they are keen to make sure their servers can handle the load. I understand that they would have limited the number of invites to a number which they can realistically support however when they all sign up all at once the system becomes slow and unresponsive like it was last night. This is taken to extremes when the Digg Effect kicks in. Swarms of hungry visitors swoop into your website/blog and, since you thought buying space on a dedicated, quad core, 4GB RAM mega-server was an unaffordable extravagance, your site will go down.

Aside from all of this, Digg is the biggest assembly of Mac zealots I think I have ever encountered. And that can’t be a good thing.

Since my first post on Thesimexchange (when I signed up) I have now doubled my money and have 2,000,000 DKP (the game’s currency). I am ranked 420th.

Now I need to start making real money.

Ladies and gentlemen I present to you Exhibit A which is a question on the Apple support forums from a guy who has just updated his iPod firmware. The ides is that he has updated it and, for some entirely insane reason, the iPod now needs to be plugged into the mains charger before it will complete the update. The guy has left his charger elsewhere and wants to know if there is a way around it. The answer, by the way, is no.

WHY?!?

I ask because I have just updated my iPod firmware at home (where my computer is, you know, the place where you often keep your music collection) and my charger is at work (where I have no spare USB ports to charge my iPod, instead deciding to use those USB ports for, you know, work). So now I have to go to work (in silence but carrying an iPod) plug it into the mains charger for about 30 seconds, then come home from work (in silence but carrying an iPod) and put my music back on.

Does this seem stupid to anyone else?

Sicko

Last night I watched Sicko by Michael Moore. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It started out in the traditional Moore style (which I don’t really like) where various people are interviewed and, lo and behold, they have had a ghastly experience. Its not that I think the stories they are telling are lies but I am suggesting that a film maker of Moore’s reputation can probably find all the extreme cases and present them as the norm.

The film then moved to a slightly different tone and pace where Moore was talking about other contries (not in the US) who have proper healthcare namely France, Canada, Cuba and the UK. In all the countries which he visited people were shocked that what they think of as basic human rights were not in place in the United States.

I urge you to watch this movie as soon as possible. I know I don’t actually have any readers but hopefully the Technorati tags will become popular. America needs to look at itself after watching this movie and realize what a degenerate, uncivilized, undemocratic den of iniquity they live in.

Another UMPC

Another UMPC video for me to get excited about. I’m not ashamed - I like tiny tiny PCs. Interestingly it runs Linux. Not necessarily interesting in itself but I have recently abandoned Linux as my desktop operating system.

µTorrent

What a fine piece of software µTorrent is. I currently have the Web UI installed which means I can add torrents to my queue remotely. With the bandwidth limiting features I can make sure torrenting doesn’t interfere with my housemates normal web use while maximizing available bandwidth at night. Download it and use it today!

I watched the apprentice last night. To my amazement Simon was not fired. The main reason I think he should’ve been fired would be this:

Ummmm… Yes…
